Cradle Of Filth – Evermore Darkly [EP & DVD]

Cradle Of Filth – Evermore Darkly [EP & DVD]
I have a confession to make and I warn you, this might shock. It’s not always been dance music for me. It’s true, there was a time, no more than seven years ago from now when there was a different kind of music on my stereo, a darker kind of music filtering through my ear drums and an altogether louder stack of CDs in the corner of my bedroom. Such CDs still remain but have recently been eclipsed by less doom-ridden, faster paced and uplifting dance music and it is true that many artists, there in that old stack have been moved on but a few still remain. Whilst it is possible to grow out of the dark, meaningless overtones of such death metal bands as 1349, there is just no escaping the emotional lyrics of such bands as Shinedown, the classic rock riffs of Steel Panther and the industrial smirk of Life of Agony. Whilst dance music takes precedence, there are some rock and metal bands that you just cannot ignore and with the release of Evermore Darkly, Cradle Of Filth are ready to prove to the world that they are one of them.

Cradle Of Filth are not a band you can just grow out of. Even you remain firmly in the ‘death metal is meaningless noise’ camp, even you cannot deny that Cradle Of Filth are a little more than your typical death metal band. Nobody can deny that underneath the thunderous drumming, the frantic guitar rhythms and the screams and snorts of vocalist Dani Filth, there actually is some orchestrated harmony. Let’s face it though; the main reason Cradle Of Filth continue to dominate the death metal market is because they promise complete mayhem on every release. They strum the life out of their guitars, beat the living daylights out of their drum skins and paint pictures of terror as Dani Filth screams about everything from murder to obsession and general pillage, all the while sticking to the gloomy melodies and symphonic backgrounds that make them stand out from the rest of the death metal pack. What will please Cradle Of Filth fans on this release is that it is simply more of the same from the band and just to prove it the album opens with the following statement; “What you are about to hear is very, very disturbing indeed.” Buckle up, you are in for one hell of a ride!

The main treat for Cradle Of Filth fans is new song Thank Your Lucky Scars, the only new material on this, a mis-match of bootleg material, reworks and demos of tracks from the band’s most recent full length album, Darkly Darkly, Venus Aversa. The new song is typical Cradle Of Filth, which is what makes it so enjoyable; a pervasive, gothic atmosphere playing host to symphonic backdrops, orchestral melodies, shredding guitars and booming drum beats. Signature Dani Filth screams fill the track with terror as the group explore all number of dark, heinous subjects.

Whilst Thank Your Lucky Scars is the track that will appeal most to fans however, it is undoubtedly the addition of tracks like Forgive Me Father and Summer Dying Fast that will have the neutral salivating over Cradle Of Filth’s adaptiveness. Moreover for someone who has moved on from the likes of Cradle Of Filth to dance music, the techno remix of Forgive Me Father shows not only that Cradle Of Filth are unafraid to break new ground but actually how similar the metal and dance genres actually are. Both incorporate a thumping beat, whether it be an actual house beat or a dark, gloomy, shredding bass line whilst both skilfully connect the various different sounds composing a song to knit one continuous and experimental piece of music that visits various different genres throughout the course of one song. The band’s orchestral version of Summer Dying Fast is perhaps a little more conventional for them than their techno outing but nonetheless proves that Cradle Of Filth can cater for any genre and are much more than a depressive, melancholic band who scream and swear needlessly over dark, downbeat music.

Something else the band are good at is naming DVDs and without a doubt, they deserve some sort of award for the title of the DVD that comes with their new EP, You Can’t Polish A Turd But You Can Cover It In Glitter. As a look into the band’s recent throughout Europe and Russia, the DVD does exactly what it says on the tin. It portrays going on tour not as a fun activity but something that is actually bloody hard work. You can’t polish a turd but you can cover it in glitter, meaning on this occasion that you can’t not tour as a band and although it is hard work, you can still get something good out of it. The documentary is edited very simply, with chatter about a certain city the band visited, some footage of the group setting up and then some live footage before the circle begins again with another city and although very formulaic, the documentary does prove a fascinating insight into the band’s often gruelling schedule and also proves that by day, Cradle Of Filth do not sleep upside down in caves but can be as ‘normal’ and human as the rest of us.

Further to the documentary, the DVD shows footage of the band’s live performance at 2011’s Graspop festival and features a set list that draws upon the history of Cradle Of Filth, mixing some of their older material with that from their most recent release,Darkly Darkly, Venus Aversa. This is a must see for any music fan as it demonstrates not just how far the band has come musically from their early days but just what a show they are capable of putting on when you see them live. As is rare with most show recordings, the spirit of a live Cradle Of Filth show is captured perfectly with lots of interesting camera work offering a great representation of exactly what it is that Cradle Of Filth are all about.

Far from simply releasing an EP that re-releases existing material, Cradle Of Filth offer so much more in Evermore Darkly with their remixes and forays into different genres. This release shows Cradle Of Filth to be more than people typically think of them. A band who put emotion at the heartbeat of every song, tour relentlessly and even play around with new genres to make themselves more appealing and relevant – not just a band who try to make as much noise as possible!
